Dear fellow Sudokuist (Is that a word?)

I must first say I am no genius but I have to admit that I have mastered Sudoku games……………

My first experience of Sudoku was on a flight where my partner and I were planning to start a new life after spending many years working in the middle east. I was feeling a bit bored on the flight and glancing along the aisle I noticed a lady with her head down, pencil in hand filling in something on her lap. She looked anything but bored.

The flight lasted 4 1/2 hours and every time I looked up there she was scribbling away and I could see by the look on her face that she was totally oblivious to everything around her.  I was intrigued to know what it was that kept her enthralled for so long.

On a visit to the loo I was able to look over her shoulder and saw that she was filling in numbers on a small square that looked like it had been torn from a newspaper.  I hadn’t seen anything like it before but my thoughts on this soon disappeared as we landed at our destination ready to start our new life.

A few days after arriving at our destination I bought a newspaper and was flicking through from the back to the front as sports fanatics tend to do when lo and behold on the crossword page a little square with the title Sudoku puzzle which was partially filled in with numbers stared back at me. Instantly it invoked memories of the lady on the flight, and I knew straight away this is what had kept her so busy.

 My curiosity aroused I began reading the rules on how to play sudoku and seeing that the level was gentle (whatever that meant) I picked up my pencil and started to fill it in. As it was my first attempt it took a lot of time, I can’t say it was easy but I was proud of myself when I was finished, I then continued reading the paper, and surprisingly came across another sudoku puzzle this time on page two. Needless to say I never did finish reading the paper but instead felt compelled to complete this puzzle too. This one didn’t take so long making me very pleased with myself. Now I was really interested! I borrowing my partners newspaper, much to her indignation, but my curiosity was aroused. I quickly rummaged through the paper and found two more Sudoku puzzles and managed to complete these also. The puzzles where a great challenge, they seemed to focused the mind, but where also very relaxing at the same time.

As I was taking a long holiday and had lots of time on my hands I found sudoku to be most enjoyable, and quite different from a crossword. You do not have to be a genius or even good at maths. To play sudoku just apply a few simple rules and you're up and running, then learn the different techniques required to progress through the different levels.

The difference between Sudoku and crosswords is that with crosswords you either know them or you don’t, they test the knowledge which you have picked up over the years, but when you are stuck that, s it. As for the cryptic crosswords, least said about those the better. I still like crosswords but find that sudoku is more satisfying. With Sudoku, by applying logic and learning the techniques you can find an answer to every puzzle. Each one is unique and does have a solution, however hard they seem. Some at first glance look easy but can be deceptively hard, but one thing you can rely on is that they are all mentally challenging. Even after you have mastered the art you can use an easy game to see how fast it can be completed.

Within a very short time you can get the hang of doing sudoku puzzles, and start progressing through the different levels.

I found after a while that the few games in the newspapers could not quench my appetite for the game and I started buying Sudoku puzzle books.  However I was finding it very satisfying and had a great sense of accomplishment every time I finished a game.
